| Do the fuckwits at blizzard understand anything about personal information security? Fuck this shit gets more and more retarded. My first and last name visible when posting on the official blizzard forums? So fucking retarded it's unbelievable. http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=13816838128&sid=1 - retardedblizzardcunt wrote:
- The first and most significant change is that in the
near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID -- that is, their real-life first and last name -- with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm. Certain classic forums, including the classic Battle.net forums, will remain unchanged.

| Wow... yeah this will definitely make it quiet on the forums. I was thinking though, it was mentioned somewhere in there that they would introduce new forums... so, maybe it's only in them. It would only be a problem if they replaced the old forums with the new, but not sure if that's what they're going to do. | |

| It seems now not only is the game mostly played by the retarded facebook generation, it's now run by the the retarded facebook generation as well.
I cannot believe that any halfway competant person couldn't see the reaction this would generate. Who the hell do they have working on their team?
@ Leaf, I think it only affects new posts

Yeah, seems like it. I read the following quote again, and I'm even more worried now. Because, if it's interpreted like assumed (that the old forum system will be replaced by the new one), we'll probably see a lot of old and useful threads go lost. Unless they keep those posts forever locked in an old version of the forum system, sort of an archive. - Vaneras wrote:

So, yeah... not liking the look of this.

| It seems this is their final response to deal with their rather poorly moderated forums. Simple take out anon and problems get solved, sounds logical but I wonder if it will work effectively.

| So what I take from this is:
if you ever write a post on those forum, all of your future employees will easily find out that you play WoW (even if you don't do it anymore) by searching your name ... and then refuse to hire you ("do you play World of Warcraft?" is actually a serious question many recruiters give in job interviews).
In addition, everyone who disagrees with your post may use your name to find out personal information about you and then ... post that information both on the forum itself (but expect a ban) and on other sites.
Even before I started studying journalism, I knew how to get peoples' social security numbers and employment histories etc with only their names to base it from. We learn about something called "ethics" when it comes to people research. Random Internet users have no obligation at all to follow those ethics.
And to conclude: I thought it was against any serious company's policies to openly publicize customer information (they are indirectly doing it by hosting forums having those policies). If they are changing their current policies through their upcoming forums by implementing that detail discretely in their terms of agreement, then it is basically a legal way to get around having to hide customer information.
How did this idea pass?
I'm sure their new terms of agreement (that everyone scrolls past) will state that Blizzard takes no responsibility in actions caused against the customer's identity outside the game because of his Real ID information. This will then make customers' attempts to sue Blizzard for personal threats useless.

| i didn't realise until tonight that the RealId allows friends of friends to see your real name and online status in game. If you want to remove the RealId, set up parental controls on yourself and disable it. Apparently, that's the only way to prevent complete strangers knowing who you are without your consent... | |

Parental control can be used to stop someone's name from showing, by not allowed him to post. Also, the two threads are getting a lot of attention. I bet they'll have a total of over 2k pages before two (full) days after they got posted. Edit: - Quote :
- WoW Players yells: RealID: the blade that destroyed our kingdom...
WoW Players yells: Stand back! Touch that ID and your identity will be scarred for all eternity! I must attempt to commune with the spirits locked away within the forums. Give me space. Back up, please.
Blizzard says: Suscribers! Could it truly be you?
WoW Players says: Blizzard! Dear Blizzard! I... I'm so disapointed.
Blizzard says: Players, you haven't much time. Activision sees what the mods sees. He will be here shortly.
WoW Players says: Activision is here? Maybe I...
Blizzard says: No, girl. Activision is not here. Activision is merely a presence within the Bobby Kotick's mind. A dwindling presence...
WoW Players says: But Blizzard, if there's any hope of reaching Activision. I... I must try.
Blizzard says: Subscribers, listen to me. You must destroy the Bobby Kotick. You cannot reason with him. He will sell you and your identity and raise a social-network for his own.
WoW Players says: Tell me how, Blizzard? How do I destroy the CEO?...
Blizzard says: Snap out of it, girl. You must destroy the RealID at the place where its started to spread - at the forums, at the official forums. It is the only way.
WoW Players says: You're right, Blizzard. Forgive me. I... I don't know what got a hold of me. We will deliver this information to all the community within Battle.net.
Blizzard says: There is... something else that you should know about the CEO. Control over the Activision must never be lost. Even if you were to strike down the Bobby Kotick, another would have to take his place. For without the control of its master, Activision would run rampant - destroying all the games you love.
Blizzard says: A grand sacrifice by a noble soul...
WoW Players says: Who could bear such a burden?
Blizzard shakes his head.
Blizzard says: I do not know, Players. I suspect that the piece of racionality that might be left inside Activision is all that holds Bobby Kotick from annihilating Azeroth.
WoW Players says: Then maybe there is still hope...
The far door opens and Bobby Kotick appears!
Blizzard says: No, Players! ARRRRRRGHHHH... He... He is coming. You... You must...
Bobby Kotick yells: SILENCE, PEON!
Bobby Kotick banishes Blizzard to the abyss.
Bobby Kotick yells: So you wish to commune in a social network? You shall have your wish.
Bobby Kotick summons in RealID and Facebook, then retraces his steps back to the north.
Bobby Kotick yells: RealID, Facebook. Bring their identities to my chamber when you are through.
RealID yells: As you wish, my lord.
Facebook yells: As you wish, my lord.
Facebook yells: Slaves of Social Networking, rise to meet your master's call!
WoW Players yells: You won't deny me this, Bobby Kotick! I must know... I must find out...
WoW Players and Forum Users run to follow the Bobby Kotick just as the door closes behind them.

yes, that's kinda what i meant. if you don;t want to ppl to know who you are, you have to turn off realId. Hence, you can;t use the RealId chat. But as i didn;t have chance to get used to it, i won;t exactly miss it .

| I suspect this is a sledgehammer to crack a nut. A lot of players (and parents of younger players, and the Right Wing in America which has lots of pressure groups/influence) probably complain at the harassment, bad language, sexually aggressive comments (of people like Xari et al, the frustrated emo teenagers) towards women players, etc, that you see on forums and in games.
On the other hand, yes, all the stalking options are then opened up. I know how that works, btw, having had to avoid a neo-Nazi knife man who tried to track me via social media and post my pic on right-wing hate sites. Nice chap ... not.
So, yes, there are plenty of sick, twisted fucks out there. The trouble is, they are on both sides of the divide I mentioned above ...

Let people post, not with their Real ID, but with their main avatar. Let people see all their characters and Blizzard games (they can't troll then), but still hide their real name.

| It's not to do with fixing the trolling problem. This is all to do with activision wanting wow and battlenet to be some rabid cock munching shit fest like facebook. The type of people coming into the game now are facebook wankers, nothing like the original pioneers of MMO playing. Why do think RP is dying on all realms? Because retarded facebook faggots can't even understand anything beyond buying their latest piece of wank shit spectral flying faggot celestial mount and posting about it on wankbook. Seriously, these people should just get a fucking chair and a rope and do the world a favour. As for the specific changes well basically it means I can't post on the forums when it's live. I have a career, yes a career, and a VERY unique surname. The only hits you get on my name are some race times from events I competed in. So it would look great when my present/future emplyers look me up and see that I spend my time pretending to be an soul sucking orc warlock who hides as a fisherman to avoid discovery. Sorry, why should I not be allowed to post on forums in order to prevent this? RPers are also a natural target for trolling, this will come to the next stage with this crap. Oh wait, ofc it won't because none of them will be posting anymore. Not that activision will care, as long as arseholes are buying the latest piece of shit from the blizzard store and having their facebook page updated with the latest cock shit about them gaining the "suck a giant cock" achievement in game. Any company willing to treat consumers as shoddily as this needs to be shown a simple lesson. You are not addicts, you don't let them bend you over and ream your ass out just so you can get your kiddie crack fix of wow. You vote with your feet. End of the road for me guys, it's been fun playing with you, and you'll still catch me here. But thats it I'm out. And yeah. I am mad. | |

I don't only have a rare surname, but I have a unique name. Even if I would only write the initial of my first name together with my surname, I would still be the only one in the world with that name. I usually don't care about letting people know my name, but I want the option, for everyone, to be able to decide whether or not they want to show it. And I'm a bit reluctant to being associated with game sites on google searches. Not that people won't find out that I'm a geek by searching me anyway (writing sites, old kung fu sites from my high school times, a very poor video of me talking about some books without thinking about how I sound etc.). The only things I'm really proud of on google are my articles for the local newspaper. I will follow what happens on the live forums though (without writing on them) and when the first incident happens that some player (with a female name) gets stalked by some douchebag from the game, I will be the first one to write a newsarticle connecting it to Blizzard.

| I predict that there will be changes made in this, as a result of the public feeling. Not least because other Vex will never be able to write a coherent email sentence again, peppering his words randomly with "shitbag" "douche" "cockfest" and the like Mark my words (about the change, not Vex!) | |
