| The basic plot of the first one (I'm fairly certain it's part of a series) was that the Roman Empire had never fallen (and it's still in it's non-Christian setting) and has stayed that was up to the modern day. The book starts with 2 guys testing out fighting robot creatures (I think in preparation for gladiatorial games). In the mean time, there is a plot against the Empire. I believe it's set in Britannia, but that's about all I can remember of the book. Any ideas? |

| Don't think so. What I can see on Amazon suggests that it's set in the first century AD. The book I'm after is set in the 1990's, as though the Roman Empire has lasted for 2 millennia. I can remember that it was classified as sci-fi in the library (where I got it from originally). |

| Romanitas perhaps? It's a triology about what it would be if the Roman Empire wouldn't have fallen... seems to be what you're looking for, yes? | |

Close, but the book would have been published no later than 1995 |

If it was on-topic then repeat it, otherwise this isn't really a trolling thread. |

| Could it be the Germanicus Trilogy by Kirk Mitchell that you're thinking of? | |

Certainly a lot more potential than the other suggestions, though I still can't see any mention of the battle robots or the characters that might be involved in something like that. Feel free to make any more suggestions if you can beat Zanick's, though I will see if I can find a copy of the first one and get a look at it. |

| I've Googled and Googled and Googled a bit more and Wikipedia comes up with this list:
The following alternate history novels are set in fictional universes where the Roman Empire never fell, and has endured to the present day:
* Romanitas (2005), by Sophia McDougall * Rome Burning (2006), sequel to Romanitas, by Sophia McDougall * Roma Eterna, a 2003 novel by Robert Silverberg * The Germanicus trilogy, a collection of books by Kirk Mitchell. * Orbis (novel) (2002), by Scott Mackay Romans return to a modern day Earth to retake it from Alien invaders who exiled them centuries ago and imposed a strange form of Christianity. * The Aquiliad (1983), by Somtow Sucharitkul. Circa 50 AD. A romp in which Roman legions discover America, battle the Aztecs, encounter Big Foot, and drive off flying saucers. * Emperor (2006), by Stephen Baxter. After a Celtic chieftain obeys an ancient prophecy, and sides with the invaders, the history of Roman Britain takes a different path. First in a series.
