Idiots on the road Empty
PostSubject: Idiots on the road   Idiots on the road EmptyFri Nov 06, 2009 1:50 pm

Right, I've had enough and I need to moan!
There are too many idiots on the road that either don't know how to drive properly or who should be banned form ever driving on them! And it seems that even the half-decent drivers are getting stupid now.
Driving along on a road where the national speed limit applies, straight and level, and I get restricted to 50 or slower because some people either don't know the limit or they don't feel confident driving at the speed limit. It's REALLY pissing me off, to the point where I'm sure that my language when held up could kill OAP's by the dozen!
Why can't people get taught like I was where you learn how to be confident at the speed limit, how to not hold up other traffic and also know when it is appropriate to limit your speed (like when it's a twisty road or on adverse weather conditions) instead of being left to be utter bastards who get in my way?!

It is usually the OAPs that do the above though...

Yea, Gurf, I´m sure all of those people who drive slowly are there for the sole purpose of getting in your way.. *nod*

I myself am careful on the road... mostly because we have 5 holes per meter square on every road... but still. I saw many people and friends who drove like madmen and they ended up either in the hospital or getting scrapped off of the inside of the car. The speed limit is there for a reason you know...
If someone wants to go faster than the speed limit, he´s free to just go around me. And yes, as you said, some people may not be confident enough to go as fast as you would like it, but how are they supposed to build up the confidence if they get bitched at by people who drive like maniacs, or don´t drive at all to avoid being bitched at..?

I'm all for careful driving, but there comes a point where driving by more than a couple of miles per hour lower than the speed limit is both ridiculous and more likely to cause accidents than stop them. The whole point about the speed limit is that it is set to what is safe for the most part (though there is one stupidly twisty, downhill road near me that is national speed limit when it should be no faster than 50, probably better at 40) and so people should be able to reach it. Being incapable of reaching the limit of the road for anything other than mechanical or legal reasons is just not good enough.

It got worse today. Went on the M25 and there were idiots in the outside lane with no one inside them and going slower than 70. Prize pillocks!

In Belgium parents can teach their children in driving. They only have to do the exams.

They are also in the top of traffic deaths (or something like that).

*points out that on national speedlimit A roads, some vehicles (anything combi van and bigger + pick up trucks used for buisness) are technically restricted to 50mph.

Not that white van men know or stick to it, but next time you are stuck behind a van, you know why Wink

If it was a van I'd have no problem with it. This is always cars, usually cars that are capable of doing double my top speed without even flinching!

Perhaps it's got nothing to do with the subject, but this springs to my mind...

About two years ago, while driving through a forest, this car comes up behind me. I'm sort of a careful driver (due to experiance rather than lack of skill as I'm driving aprox 200 km each day in work) so I let the hot-headed young males that want to race past me do exactly that.
This time, however, I snailed forward carefully, effectingly blocking the way for the person behind me. Yes, terribly rude, I could almost hear him cursing me, feeling his aggression building...
Anyway, when he got a (bad) oppertunity to drive past, he did so, almost forcing me off the slipperty autumn road. It was dark so I couldn't see the finger he was most likely giving me.

About five minuts later I reached his car, now with a moose through his pane.
It was october, in a forest, in sweden. Moose migration time. I lived nearby, knew the aprox number of wild life collisions each year.

Maybe I'm just a poor driver that should never have recieved a driver's license. But then maybe, just maybe, I had a *reason* to drive irritatingly slow.

just my 2c

Sadly, moose don't roam the UK highways and byways.

Yes, that was exactly my point. The moose. Not the fact that I knew something the guy behind me didn't, which urged me to caution. The same couldn't be applied to somewhere with regular high ground water, iceing or a sharp bend.

(Takes a quick peek at care accident statistics on Vägverket and SCB)
Yup, it's right there. Young male, top of the chart, just beneath intoxicated.

If any of those points were valid then I wouldn't have made this thread. As it stands, I am regularly coming across people driving this way and in various scenarios. They are all driving like idiots, hence my post.

4 years driving experience here (1st was a learner)

The only thing that I can consider being an annoyance on the road is someone driving down a national speed limit road (60 mph) at about 30 because they actually have no idea what the speed limit is because "There are no signs!!"

Driving at half the speed limit is equally as dangerous as driving double it...I have almost ran into a few cars because of above example.

Oh that and chavs...

PostSubject: Re: Idiots on the road   Idiots on the road EmptyTue Nov 10, 2009 12:25 pm

18 years car experience and 6 or so motorbike years here...

Sadly, there's feck all you can do about idiots on the road, be they slow or reckless. I get more angry about the ones that do stupid things that could get people hurt or killed. My FB page often has one rant or another about drivers.

While I hate getting stuck behind people who are slow, you can either find a safe way past or just suck it up. Something that's very strong with bikers is not pushing anyone to attempt to ride beyond their abilities. It often leads to accidents. Same works for driving cars, imo.

Don't tailgate, don't put pressure on them 'cuz if they panic and feck up not only could it lead to people getting hurt/killed, you amongst the casualties, it could have repercussions to other people on the roads that have nothing to do with it. Knock-on effects. A few times over the years I've gotten so pissed off about one incident and nearly run myself right into another.

Just have a rant every now and then on FB, most people will agree with you and it can at least vent some of the frustration. Wink

Oh definitely do not do that...Although you are told not to at driving tests or else you get a big FAIL.

I feel it is all down to confidence on the road. In a perfect world people would avoid national speed limit roads if they felt that could not do 60 comfortably but not the case (sometimes no choice).

One thing though that people need to remember on the road...You can get pulled over for driving too slow as well as driving too fast.

A lot of people throw away what they're taught during their lessons and pick up bad habits after they've passed their test. My most common rant on FB is tailgaters. Even in a situation where getting past will achieve nothing, they keep up your backside. I know someone who does it without thinking. Neutral

And yeah, you can get pulled for going too slow, but i've never seen it happen. Laughing
